Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has slammed Matthijs de Ligt, claiming he is little more than an upgrade on Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils signed De Ligt from Bayern Munich in the summer with the hope of improving the team’s defence.

The Dutch defender has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford and was recently thrashed 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur.

United signed defender for a fee of £43million from Bayern Munich this summer, with other arrivals including Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte.

“De Ligt has come in for Maguire, let’s say, but there’s no big difference there.

When asked whether he felt the Holland international was an upgrade on Maguire, Scholes replied: “No, absolutely not.”

“When you bring in new players you expect them to be better than the players you have but I don’t see how they make a huge difference. De Ligt has replaced Maguire but there’s been no real difference,” Scholes told ทางเข้า ufabet Sport.

“You don’t know how they’re going to approach games, whether they are going to play on the counter-attack or sit deep or whether they’re going to try to have all the possession in the game. We’ve no idea. They look like an uncoached football team.

“We’re two and a bit years in now… from the first week Ange Postecoglou went in, we probably knew what Tottenham were doing and they’re doing it to this day.

Asked if he felt De Ligt was an improvement on Maguire, Scholes replied: “No, not at all.”
